The Floating Hat
Steve Hauk’s play · songs by Piotr J. Flatau
The Floating Hat tells the story of a friendship between two artists who communicated without words: the deaf painter Granville Redmond and Charlie Chaplin, the master of silent cinema. Chaplin gave Redmond a place to work at his film studio in Los Angeles; their relationship shows how artists working in different fields can inspire and influence one another.
The play explores disability in a way rarely seen on stage, presenting Redmond not as a tragic figure but as an artist with a sense of humor and an independent voice. His friendship with Chaplin invites reflection on the artist’s solitude, the passing of artistic forms, and the place of an artist with a disability in the world of art.
